However, my early investigation has come up various notes and comments that leave me with a number of question marks: It’s my understanding that the logical first component might be the Links1000 cellular communicator. I thought my first DIY effort would be to get cellular going on it.
I’m not trying to secure Fort Knox here, and I want to do this somewhat economically, but I want some kind of security system in place, and I’d like to bring it into the modern world. Now I’m thinking about a total DYI by enhancing our security with smoke and CO detectors, cameras and maybe monitoring and controlling the system by cell phone myself. And I’ve looked at the SimpliSafe do-it-yourself systems on line.
We’ve talked to the local servicer/monitor for DSC as well as ADT and others. I am reviewing options to replace (or augment, if possible) the DSC system. It doesn’t have the cellular module, and we only use our cell phones now (AT&T), so we don’t currently have a land line for central monitoring. We recently had the system checked out and re-activated (door open chimes, etc. We moved in in 2007, but never had it re-activated! It had been the model home and the builder had it connected to a security company via land line, but deactivated the monitoring service and system. It has 2 system keypads, 5 door contacts and 2 motion detectors (all wireless to the main panel), and a siren. When we bought our home (built in 2005) it had a DSC PC5010 CP-01system already installed.
